Reviews: Top Cheapest King Size Mattresses

Linenspa 8 Inch Memory Foam and Innerspring Hybrid Mattress

Construction & Structure:

The mattress is Linenspa’s one of the best sellers. The hybrid design comprises four layers. The topmost layer is the cover with quilted conforming memory foam with a plush feel. It helps in relieving pressure. The second layer comprises of a 1.5-inch comfort layer of polyurethane foam. The third layer is a thin felt pad to provide insulation from the last layer of steel coils. The last layer is a 6.5-inch tempered steel coil which acts as a support for the mattress and offers some bounce like traditional innerspring mattresses.

Firmness (feel & experience):

With under $100 price tag, this is the cheapest king size mattress with some incredible value attached. The mattress has a medium-firm to firm feel which will cater to a large segment of people. If you prefer mattress to be little on the softer side than you should avoid this.

The hybrid combination of foam and coil provides good support as well as a hug without the dip in feel.

Motion Transfer & Edge Support:

The springs used are noise-free so move around, turn around on the mattress without any stress of disturbing anyone. This not a mattress with complete isolation from motion transfer. You will notice some motion transfer but not that would bother most of the sleepers.

The edge support is average. While you take a position and sit on the edge, it does sink in a few inches. You may not fall down but you won’t be comfortable sitting for a longer duration. You will have to re-adjust yourself.

Zinus Memory Foam 8 Inch Green Tea Mattress

Construction & Structure:

The Zinus green tea mattress is available in four options of varied thickness. It is available in 6-inch,8-inch,10-inch, and 12-inch.

The 8-inch mattress has three layers. The top layer is 2-inch memory foam, the middle layer is 2-inch pressure relief high-density foam. The last layer is 4-inch in thickness.  It forms a high- density base support foam.

The memory foam is infused with green tea extracts and ActivCharcoal. The green provides fresh and odor-free experience. The charcoal particles absorb the moisture.

Firmness (feel & experience):

The 6 and 8-inch mattress is medium-firm. The major difference is in the feel they provide. As the thickness increases, it gets a little softer. Hence you will find the 8-inch mattress is a bit on the softer side.

The comfort foam supports and relieves the body from pressure generated around the shoulders and hip area. You can expect to wake up fresh and stress-free.

Motion Transfer & Edge Support:

It is all foam mattress with top layer memory foam so the motion isolation is good. Your partner will hardly feel any movement while you move in and out of bed.

The edge support is adequate. You will feel comfortable sleeping on the edge or you sit on the edge changing your shoes.

The Zinus is compressed, rolled and shipped in a box. The free shipping is timely and by FedEx.

They do offer a 100-night trial and full refund.

Nectar Mattress – Gel Memory Foam

Construction & Structure:

The top layer of the Nectar is the 1″ cover made up of layers of gel memory foam and Tencel™. The second layer is a semi-open premium gel memory foam with 1″ thickness. The 3-inch third layer is adaptive memory foam. It provides effective pressure relief. The fourth layer is a 6″ breathable foam base layer which provides the foundation to the mattress. The fifth and the last layer is a bottom cover which helps in keeping the mattress in the correct place.

Firmness (feel & experience):

The mattress is medium-firm. It suits all kinds of sleepers with good lumbar support. The gel memory foam is effective for hot sleepers and does get rid of body heat generated to a large extent. If you are used to sleeping on a spring mattress, you are going to miss the bounce.

The body does not provide a typical sink-in feel common in memory foam mattresses. Nectar provides good support and contouring.

The mattress is rates good on sleep quality as well as on spine support.

Motion Transfer & Edge Support:

Nectar provides acceptable edge support but excels in motion isolation. Motion isolation is one the highlights of the mattress. There have been complaints on edge support particularly after long usage of the mattress.

LUCID 10 Inch Bamboo Charcoal and Aloe Vera Infused Memory Foam

Construction & Structure:

The Lucid is a 10-inch mattress with six layers. The first layer is primarily a soft, breathable, flame-resistant breathable cover. It provides a nice air layer between your body and the mattress. The mattress comprises of Tencel™ lyocell blend which is effective in controlling moisture.

The second layer is a 1.5″ memory foam with particles of bamboo charcoal. It absorbs moisture and odor helping you wake up fresh and happy.

The third layer is a 1-inch transition foam infused with aloe vera. It has a calming effect on you which gives you a more relaxed sleep.

The fourth layer and sixth layer is a 1″ each support foam for the coils base layer.

The fifth layer is the 5.5″ base of the mattress. It has encased steel coils that provide support and pressure relief to the key areas of the body.

Firmness (feel & experience):

The mattress has a plush feel and we rate it as medium-firm with little on the softer side. The overall feel is plush but does not mistake it as soft.

The mattress base has encased coils which provide a slight bounce to the mattress. Traditional innerspring mattress sleepers will be able to relate to the mattress easily.

In our reviews and past customer experiences, we found most of the sleepers happy shifting to this mattress. It provides you a good experience at an affordable price.

Motion Transfer & Edge Support:

The motion transfer is least and we cannot expect it to match memory foam mattresses. The encased steel coils sandwiched between support foam seems to be working efficiently in isolating motion transfer.

The edge support is excellent in this price range. Its support is 5-inch in thickness which upon compression does hold on to you well.

Nod by Tuft & Needle King Mattress

Construction & Structure:

The most affordable Tuft & Needle mattress, Nod comprises two polyurethane foams. The top layer is 2.5″ T&N polyfoam comfort layer and the base is 5.5″ poly foam support layer.

The mattress cover is a typical bed-in-box removable cover. It is a good quality polyester cover. Avoid machine wash of the cover.

The mattress is advertised on cooler side. We didn’t find it matching with any standard cooling gel-based memory foam. Although we didn’t find it hot either. The foam is an open-cell foam which helps in the free flow of air.

Firmness (feel & experience):

The Nod is a firm yet comfortable mattress. The mattress is quite responsive and supports your body nicely. We found the experience better than the regular memory foam mattress in this segment.

Motion Transfer & Edge Support:

Motions isolation is excellent. Mattress compresses but regains its original form. You can freely move in and out of the bed without disturbing your co-sleeper.

The edge support is above average and good enough to support you if you sleep on the edge.

Signature Sleep Flex 8″ Charcoal Gel Memory Foam Mattress

Construction & Structure:

The flex is a four-layered all-foam mattress. As the name suggests, the upper layer is a gel-based memory foam with charcoal particles infused into it.

The charcoal has the property to absorb moisture and odor. It helps you sleep fresh.

The foam has grooves which helps in good air-flow providing relief to hot sleepers in summers. The mattress structure helps in regulating the body temperature while you are sleeping.

Firmness (feel & experience):

The mattress is medium-firm thanks to the support provided by the base of the mattress. The top layers provide a snuggle soft feel but it doesn’t make you feel deep sin. The base of the mattress holds and provides comfort.

You will feel it little firm if you are switching from a soft or a mattress with little plush feel.

Motion Transfer & Edge Support:

The signature sleep flex has a waterfall edge design that absorbs most of the movement in the bed. You can come in and out of bed with disturbing the sleep of your partner.

The mattress scores well on motion isolation and edge support.

Sealy 8″ Memory Foam Bed In A Box Mattress

Construction & Structure:

The Sealy uses 8″ all-foam for its bed-in-a-box mattress. The upper layer is a 2″ premium adaptive memory foam. It adapts to your body shape and provides relief to pressure areas. It gives you a “sink-in” mattress feel without feeling stuck in the mattress.

The base of the mattress is a 6-inch high-density polyurethane foam. It promotes air-flow and acts as a support for the mattress.

Firmness (feel & experience):

The mattress has a medium-firm feel. It should suit all kinds of sleepers. It has a polyurethane base that provides support and feeling of holding the body. The memory foam provides the softness and comfort to the body.

Motion Transfer & Edge Support:

The mattress provides good edge support and minimal motion transfer as expected from memory foam mattresses.

Zinus Ultima Comfort 8″ Spring Mattress

Construction & Structure:

The Ultima has a knitted jacquard cover with a micro-fiber quilted fabric. The base of the mattress is a 7.5″ pocketed coils. The Zinus calls it iCoil system. It provides strength to the mattress and support to the body.

Over the top of springs, there is a good quality 1″ comfort foam.

Although with mere 1″ comfort foam, you still won’t feel any coils even after a prolong usage.

We would recommend this mattress to individuals below 230 pounds each. Overweight individuals may face a slight issue of sagging after a couple of years of regular usage.

Firmness (feel & experience):

The mattress is medium-firm to slightly firm. The overall experience is good. It provides good support and comfort. It aligns well with the spine. It does provide a pressure-free experience to the sleeper.

Motion Transfer & Edge Support:

The motion isolation is above average but the edge support is good.

Casper Sleep Essential Mattress

Construction & Structure:

The mattress is also available in 11″ thickness which sells in higher number. As we are looking at cheaper options so we have opted for 8.5″ mattress.

The mattress has three layers. The top layer is breathable. It provides a soft feel, little bounce, and comfort. It has an open-cell structure which helps in dissipating heat from the body.

The middle layer is a transition layer which is responsive memory foam. The layer helps in supporting the pressure areas and cradle curves.

The base layer is the durable support foam. It reinforces and supports top layers.

The foams are CertiPUR-US and OEKO-TEX certified.

Firmness (feel & experience):

The mattress is medium-firm and supports the entire body very well. You will wake up fresh and relaxed. It relieves pressure from shoulders and lower body.

Motion Transfer & Edge Support:

The mattress has negligible motion transfer and most of the past customers have shown satisfaction. Even if you toss and turn in the bed. The other side of the bed will hardly notice any movement.

The edge support is average. While sitting on the edge for any average weighing person may not be a big issue but if you like to sleep on the edge than you may look for other options.

Olee Sleep 10″ Gel Infused Memory Foam Mattress

Construction & Structure:

The Olee Sleep has three layers of foam plus a base support foam. The top layer is a 1 inch “I Gel” memory foam which helps in keeping your body cool. We found this feature quite good as compared to other mattresses with similar gels. It is one of the highlights of the mattress.

Hot sleepers are you reading this!

The second layer is 1-inch thick soft memory foam with 8 ILD. The third layer is a 25 ILD convoluted foam with 1-inch thickness.

The base of the mattress is 7-inch high-density foam which holds the mattress

The cover is a knitted one, which is attached to the blue bottom. It is 93% polyester and 7% spandex.

Firmness (feel & experience):

The mattress is medium-firm to slightly firm feel depending on your last long term mattress.

The company recommends 72 hours for the complete regaining of shape including off-gassing. But individuals who are sensitive to off-gassing may find it to be completely free from the smell in 6 to 7 days.

The mattress provides good comfort and support. When we consider the price after discounts, it is one of the best cheap mattresses.

Motion Transfer & Edge Support:

The mattress sinks around 2 inches but regains its position if you move. As the sink is not deep, your partner won’t notice your tossing and turning. Motion isolation is good.

The high-density base ensures good edge support even if there is a dip of around two inches by soft foams.

The mattress scores well on edge support and minimal motion transfer.

Modway Aveline 6″ Gel Infused Memory Foam Mattress

Construction & Structure:

The mattress is available in three thicknesses 6, 8, 10. Our recommendation will be to go for 8 or 10 inches but as we are on a budget so we opted for 6″ mattress.

The mattress has two layers of foam. The top layer is 1.5″ gel-infused memory foam and the base layer is 4.5″ responsive foam.

We found the support on a thicker version mattress was better than this 6″ mattress.

The top layer is conforming and keeps you cooler as it is infused with cooling gel. It is an open-cell foam and is quite breathable. We did not notice any sweating or waking up in the night due to heat.

The base foam is only 4.5″ but it is quite good in support.

The cover with a zipper is stretchable and has diamond patterns.

Firmness (feel & experience):

It is a medium-firm mattress. Most of the people are happy with the mattress but we did notice some customers complaining about waking up a little sore.

In our reviews, we found the mattress comfortable and pressure relieving.

The mattress is slow in off-gassing but over a period of a week, we could hardly notice any smell.

Motion Transfer & Edge Support:

Motion isolation and edge support is above average and acceptable. The co-sleeper could notice the partner moving in and out of bed.

The edge support is decent and you can sit on the edge with ease even though it sinks a bit.

Cheap Mattress Compromises

1. Density of Foam

This is the top concern for us in any mattress under any budget. The pricing of a mattress fluctuates considerably based on the quality of foam used. The properties of foam such as density and ILD sets the firmness, life, and pricing.

Low-Density foam is cheaper and hence lower in quality. This is the number one factor to keep a check on the pricing of the mattress.

Two other important factors related to density are ILD and recovery time. ILD ratings are used to gauge the firmness of the foam. Recovery time is the time required by foam to regain its shape when compressed.

Most of the mattresses have multiple layers of foam. The ILD ratings of each foam used in the mattress will help you understand the quality. It will help you understand if the kind of firmness offered suits your comfort.

The overall feel and comfort are decided by the combination of different foams used in the mattress. A keen eye on which layer of foam has been compromised for quality will help us choose the mattress.

The core of the mattress provides support to the mattress. If it is made up of polyurethane or some other foam, lower density means the material used is on the lower side. It will ensure the price check but may have an issue in longevity.

2. Springs

A lot of hybrid mattresses use coils as core support. This is where a lot of companies save money.

The mattresses may have one of the two types of spring systems, open coil or pocket sprung. The open coil is the traditional innerspring. Pocket-coil is more expensive and better than an open coil.

The gauge of the coil is also another factor that affects the price. The thickness or gauge of the coils determines the support and durability.

The gauge of mattress generally varies between 12 to 15. Lower the value, thicker the coil. The coil with a gauge will of 12 will be firm and provide.

The mattress specification may be misleading or too technical for an average consumer to understand the strength of the core.

We recommend that an average king size mattress should have 800 coils. The budget king size mattress may have a lower number of coils. This will affect the firmness and strength of the mattress. It may sag earlier than expected.

The right combination of the number of coils and gauge can be a tricky thing. A gauge of 12.75 and a very high number of coils cannot be the best option. It will wear out the top comfort layer being too firm.

3. Certification

Proper certification is a must for a mattress in any budget. Certification will ensure that the material used is non-toxic and environmentally friendly.

It is may not be what you see is what you get unless it is certified. The kind of material used has to be human-friendly. You don’t want to inhale or your skin in touch with something that can be toxic in the long run.

Most of the mattresses to the least are certified by CertiPUR-US. Any reputable not for profit organization certification will ensure peace of mind.

4. Off-Gassing

Off-Gassing is on the top of priority irrespective of your budget. It is a release of chemical smell when you unbox your mattress.

Most of the consumers have a wrong notion about off-gassing being toxic. This is actually not true. It may have an unpleasant smell for few but that may not be due to some toxic release.

If your mattress is CertiPUR-US certified than you can be sure that the release is non-toxic.

Although your cheapest king size mattress may be certified but may still have harmless off-gassing. In order to save costs, the manufacturer may use certified material but will have some off-gassing.

Also, not everyone is averse to smell, it depends upon the individual to individual.

5. Warranty

All the budget options will have a lower warranty period or limited warranty.

Before you click the buy button make sure you go through the terms and conditions of the warranty. You need to be sure of what you are getting into in case you need to avail warranty.

Make a note of pickup cost if the mattress is required for some repair or replacement. This cost can be a deal-breaker and may not be worth the warranty.

6. Durability

This is the last one on our list as this is the biggest compromise and differentiating factor. Any product or service which falls under the budget category will not be as durable as the one with a higher price.

You will save on the price front but lose on longevity.  We don’t want to discourage or set you up for the inferior product. We have smartly compromised on features so that the product is within your price range. And it is more durable than other mattresses which are similarly priced. It should be the best bang for your buck.

The budget range mattresses tend to sag sooner or later. As mentioned above about the density of foam and quality of springs are important factors.

The mattresses may age faster and show signs of wear and tear. The quality of the cover, fabric, and stitching are areas to look carefully into.

Do you save any money when you buy online?

Yes, when you buy online. You drop a few middlemen, stores and thereby cost involved. The last 5 years have seen a massive shift. Consumers are buying from online channels instead of brick and mortar stores. Many mattress manufacturers have kept the prices lower without compromising on quality. It has been possible by selling through online mode and ditching physical stores.

Guide: How to set the best cheapest budget?

Opting for the cheapest option in the market does not seem to be a viable option right now. If we find a mattress worth sharing on this list, we do update our recommendations as we have done in this past.

Our list is divided into three major price blocks viz. under $1000, under $500 and under $300.

In this guide, we will formulate a strategy for you to pin down a budget range for you. This will help you pick the best mattress for you.

We are sharing the most crucial factors that you need to consider while deciding your budget.

Duration

How long do you intend to use the mattress?

If you are going to use it for a long period of time say more than 5 years. We would urge you to extend your budget and pick one from under $1000 category from our list.

It is no brainer that it will come with quality and features which would hardly look like any compromise.

A cheaper mattress under $300 will last a couple of years or a little more and than you will have invest in a new mattress.

Which room?

Are you planning to buy king size mattress for your master bedroom or guest room?

A guest room mattress will be used occasionally hence will have a longer life. A $500 bed will last longer because of its low usage.

The master bedroom mattress is your goto bed for daily usage. It will be subjected to more stress and will lead to wear and tear early if the material is sub-par.

Who will use it?

Is it going to a young adult’s bed or person who on the heavier side?

An individual weighing more than 230 pounds will exert more pressure and stress on the mattress. As compared to a teenager who weighs way less and may move out in the next couple of years.

So this can be important in choosing a mattress.

Material

Consider the above three questions and decide on the material which will be more suitable for your needs.

Depending on your requirements most of the options will be hybrid beds.  As we had discussed in the mattress compromises section. Look out for specifications on foam density, coils and overall strength of the core of the mattress.

We understand the pricing becomes a prime concern when we are looking for budget options. We researched extensively to list down mattresses based on features offered, quality of material and pricing.

Although we would recommend a mattress under $1000 if you cannot match the price go for under $500 mattress.

Final Thoughts

The thought of buying a mattress can be intimidating for most of us. The first thought on our mind is “I don’t want to end up with a wrong mattress!”

When you decide to buy a mattress through online mode, you can be sure of getting the best price.

Brick and mortar stores have limited brands available at the display.  The traditional way of buying a mattress by trying it at the store may give you a sense of security. But we all know many stories of consumers ending up with a wrong mattress.

The underlying reason for choosing a bad mattress is the lack of proper knowledge and a trusted source of information. We are sure we have been able to address both of them for you. Keep supporting us as you have been doing!
