Keeping your spine neutral is essential for any sleeping position. Any strain or pressure on the spine or joints due to wrong positioning can lead to shoulder pain and neck pain.

There are a few things to keep in mind when you sleep on the side.

Make sure you pick up a latex or memory foam mattress as they help in distributing your body weight evenly. These are soft in firmness which provides better contouring and cushioning around the shoulders and hips. Hence, these are helpful in relieving joint pain.

Side sleepers can choose to sleep on the left or right side depending on health conditions if any. If the left side is beneficial for people who often complain about heartburn and snoring then the right side sleeping is beneficial for your heart. Sleeping on the right creates more room in the chest cavity and reduces pressure on the heart. 

Sleeping on a regular flatbed on the side exerts more pressure on the shoulders. But with a slight incline on the upper body relieves pressure. It helps you sleep more comfortably without switching positions to ease the pressure.

The feet should be raised to half the incline of the upper body in order to ensure a comfortable sleeping position. The resting position of the head and foot can vary depending on your comfort level.
