Do heavy side sleepers have different expectations from the mattress as compared to other obese people?

The answer is yes!

One of our readers recently dropped a query for us under our popular section Ask SMHQ (specific questions about mattress buying help).

Instead of updating our article catering to all the people looking for a relevant mattress for side sleepers. We thought to add a new sub-article dedicated to heavy side sleepers. So that they can find all the info easily.

The most common question among large people who prefer side sleeping is –

What is the Best Mattress Type for Heavy Side Sleepers?

All side sleepers prefer a hybrid mattress. Medium firmness and softer top provide maximum comfort to heavy people. As a side sleeper, there will be a lot of stress on the shoulder and hip areas.

A soft hybrid mattress with a base mattress made with high-density thick foam or coil base will be your best bet. For more details, please check out our buying guide section below.

Here are our recommendations if you are an overweight side sleeper.

Mattress Buying Guide for Heavy Side Sleepers

As a side sleeper, most of the pressure is generated on the shoulder and hips while you sleep. But if your weight is ranging 200-300 lbs, you will require a mattress capable of handling the extra weight and body shape so that it can provide adequate pressure relief.

We have already discussed tips on mattress buying in our previous article on the best mattresses for side sleepers. In this guide, we will look into the specific factors you need to look for if you are obese or a plus-size side sleeper.

It is the most important factor to consider while buying your next mattress. We would recommend a mattress with a soft to medium-firm mattress for good support and pressure relief for an average or lighter person.

For a heavy person, the weight distribution is not apt in a softer mattress. A mattress ranging from medium-firm to firm is best suited for a plus-size individual. Neutral spine alignment is more tricky among side sleepers and being heavy does not help either.

You don't want to bottom out on your mattress as it is going to affect your joints and pressure points.

Mattress Type:

The right mattress type is going to provide you with proper firmness and support. For a heavy side sleeper, we would suggest a hybrid mattress. A hybrid mattress is a combination of two or more material types.

Hybrid mattresses are constructed with innerspring at the base and multiple layers of other materials like polyfoam, memory foam, latex, etc.

But there is a piece of caution not to indulge in a cheap hybrid mattress. The low-budget mattress doesn't tend to last longer. Sooner or later your experience will turn into frustration.

As innerspring forms the core of the mattress, most of the low-end mattresses compromise on the quality of coils.

Buy a mattress with good quality coils. For a heavy side sleeper, a thick coil around 12-14 gauge is recommended. The lesser the gauge, the more firm the mattress is. Also, note that a heavier you are more firm mattress will be suitable for you.

It also enhances the edge support of the mattress and increases the surface area to volume ratio.

Coil count is another factor that determines the age of the hybrid mattress. For a queen mattress, the number of coils should be at least 400.

The thickness of the mattress should be 12-inches and above.

The hybrid mattress provides good airflow and good body conforming support to your shoulders and hips. The top layers are generally gel-infused foam or latex. These layers have an open-cell structure to dissipate body heat.

The thickness and the support provided by memory foam/latex layers balance the firmness provided by the coil layer. The memory foam/latex layer provides adequate comfort and a soft feel and the coil layer prevents a sink-in feel.

Your co-sleeper or partner's weight should also be one of the factors to determine your next mattress. If your partner is lightweight, a firm mattress can be uncomfortable for them.

Which is the Best Mattress Topper for Heavy Side Sleepers?

Most of us tend to opt for a mattress topper to add a plush and conforming feel to the existing mattress. But if you are an overweight side sleeper, you should avoid a soft mattress topper and opt for a medium-firm topper.

Choose a topper with medium thickness like 3-inch for the right balance of contouring. Our recommendation is a Molecule AirTEC topper

It is a perfect topper with a cooling effect and good support. It has a triple-zone to support the head, waist, and legs. The foam has an open-cell foam structure to make it breathable and provides temperature control.

Frequently Asked Question by Heavy Side Sleepers

  1. What is the recommended firmness for heavy side sleepers?

A firm mattress is recommended for a heavy side sleeper but an average overweight side sleeper (250-300lbs) feels comfortable on a firm to medium-firm mattress in some cases.

  2. What is the best pillow for heavy side sleepers?

Choosing the right pillow is essential for a heavy person with broad shoulders. The neck should be elevated enough for neutral spine alignment and should be comfortable for a good night's sleep. We recommend highly reliable Layla Pillow made with Kapok fibers.
